MARINE
PROTECTED
AREA
Marine conservation areas are recognized worldwide as an important effort to protect biodiversity and sustainable use of marine resources. Effectively managing conservation areas will protect important habitats that are beneficial to marine health.
Management of conservation areas in Indonesia has a marine spatial planning strategy of 10% of marine waters in Indonesia for the protection of biodiversity and sustainable use. The Indonesian government in 2030 targets 32.5 million hectares (ha), collaboration with stakeholders, NGOs, business actors, the community is the right step in supporting the targets to be achieved.
Rehabilitation of development activities and exploitation of terrestrial and coastal areas on Bintan Island is in rapid development, several areas are known to experience degradation due to these activities, including the effect of abrasion due to loss of green open space, therefore it is deemed very necessary to carry out rehabilitation after these activities are carried out in activities This is to restore the ecological function and naturalness of an area. In its planning, the Ecology Foundation will cooperate with the local government and several environmental communities on Bintan Island.
Many critical lands in Bintan are formed due to bauxite mining. Run offs that occur during the rainy season cause sediment in the surrounding waters such as estuaries or island edges. These deposits cover seagrass and coral reefs. In addition to having an impact on biological natural resources, it also has an impact on surrounding tourism activities, because if the run-off brings large amounts of soil or sediment particles, it makes the waters cloudy and disrupts tourism activities such as snorkeling or diving.
Rehabilitation is carried out to restore, improve, improve the condition of the land so that it functions again optimally. The implementation location (pilot project) was chosen to be carried out on Buton Island because there are illegal bauxite mining activities that have been sealed by the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry.

MAPUR ISLAND
The Riau Archipelago, which is one of the outermost provinces with direct borders with neighboring countries, makes it an area to be considered for the future, but it seems that some people who depend on nature are not able to understand it.
This event is a running sports competition activity which is held on a small island on the east side of Bintan Island with the concept of running through residential areas, forests, beaches and beaches, namely Mapur Island, Bintan Regency, Riau Islands Province.
The purpose of this program is expected to become an annual agenda, and make Mapur Island a tourism destination based on nature conservation and designation as a Marine Tourism Village by the District Government Bintan.
Event participants and local communities are involved in releasing captive turtle hatchlings, planting coral reefs in marine waters with an adoption system (naming/tagging) and enjoying the beauty of the clam park by snorkeling. This Kima Park is the result of a joint initiative with the Mapur Island community, whose main profession is traditional fishing in the context of building and fostering tourism-based empowerment of coastal communities in Bintan Regency.
The issue of plastic waste is still a major concern in the world, the pollution caused by plastic waste has reached a very worrying stage. Meanwhile, there is a big challenge to change people's patterns/behaviors in utilizing the needs of using plastic products wisely. One of the most obvious steps is the effort to use plastic straws with a paid plastic policy. Departing from that in order to answer the vision and mission, the Ecology Foundation tries to initiate a substitution program for the use of plastic straws through awareness campaigns aligned with economic improvement and empowerment of coastal communities.
Bamboo straw craftsmen are coastal communities with ± 10 years of experience making bamboo straws for sale on a small scale. The quality of the bamboo straws made has been recognized by several local and foreign countries. The manufacture and maintenance of straws is still done traditionally with human labor and without chemical preservatives. The bamboo resources taken are local products that grow in the forests of Bintan Island. Bamboo is a natural resource that is easily renewable and can be an alternative to straws. Lightweight and strong, bamboo straws are reusable, biodegradable without harming the environment, and do not contain any chemicals or dyes. But keep in mind that if the bamboo is no longer suitable for use, please throw it away in a place that can decompose it. Let's join the Ecology Foundation in fighting the use of single-use plastic in our daily lives by using reusable and environmentally friendly straws such as Bamboo Straw by Ecology. #saynotoplasticstraw
